Pashmina – an Okolo Signature Product

Pashmina is one of the most universally mis-used names in the fashion industry. Essentially anything that resembles a slightly oversized scarf has been called a Pashmina, however Pashmina is Fine Cashmere and is the name attributed to Cashmere yarn that is 12 to 16 microns in thickness.

Pashmina wool comes from Changthangi or Pashmina goat, which is a special breed of goat indigenous to the high altitudes of the Himalayas in India, Nepal and Pakistan. These goats grow a thick, warm fleece. They survive on grass in mountain areas where temperatures plunge to as low as −20 °C (−40.00 °F)

The goats provide the wool for Kashmir and Nepal’s famous Pashmina shawls. Shawls made from Pashmina wool are considered very fine, and are revered across the world. Pashmina shawls are hand spun, woven and embroidered in Nepal and Kashmir, and made from fine cashmere fiber. There is no such material as Viscose, Modal or Acrylic scarves that are Pashmina.

Some Pashmina Facts:

  • Softens over time when it absorbs moisture.
  • Both warm and soft.
  • Always made with Cashmere. While it may be blended with Silk or Cotton for design and cost reasons, it is only genuine Pashmina when it is 100% pure Changthangi goat wool

At Okolo, we only sell 100% natural fabrics, which include genuine Pashmina wool, genuine cashmere and real silk. Every purchase from Okolo empowers us to support the shawl-making legacy and heritage of the amazing Nepalese and Kashmiri artisans we have grown to love.

Genuine Pashmina is not a shiny fabric [at all]; it only shines when Silk is blended with Cashmere

Pashmina Shawls are literally works of art. All of our Pashmina Shawls and Scarfs are handmade and hand-embroidered by Kashmiri or Nepalese Artisans who can spend up to two years to finish just one piece.

These Artisans have Pashmina Shawl-making literally in their blood, their craft dates back many generations and the techniques are handed down through the family lineage. Okolo is proud to sell truly authentic, meticulously embroidered, handcrafted Pashmina Shawls. When buying one of our Pashmina Shawls or scarfs, you are adding the level of sophistication into your wardrobe that royal figures, like Princess Diana, are immortally remembered for wearing.
